A service of Post-Polio Health International

Post-Polio Health International - PHI

PHI is a non-profit organization, established in 1960 whose mission "...is to enhance the lives and independence of polio survivors and home ventilator users through education, advocacy, research and networking."  PHI is the creator and overseer of Polio Place.

The site is a reference desk of information on the late effects of polio and independent living topics, and provides on-line access to numerous articles from its newsletters, Post-Polio Health and Ventilator-Assisted Living, dating from 1988. Current and past funded research studies are reported. PHI maintains an extensive Post-Polio Directory of medical and rehabilitation resources, and post-polio organizatons and support group.

The site also disseminates literature from PHI-hosted international post-polio conferences and issues formal statements on issues such as physical exercise for people with neuromuscular disabilities.

Advocacy information includes explanations and direct links to legislation regarding the  American with Disabilities Act, such as the current ADA Guidelines for Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities, and the latest developments resulting from the United Nations convention to protect the rights of  persons with disabilities.
